Common questions

Which file should I add first?

The original — the one that came before. The second file is treated as the changed copy, and the result reads as "what was done to the first to get the second". If you get them the wrong way round, every insertion shows up as a deletion; use the arrows in the list to swap them.

What do I get back?

A Word document with every insertion and deletion marked as a real tracked change, so you can open it and accept or reject each one.

Can I compare a PDF against a Word file?

Yes. Anything that is not already a Word document is converted to one first, and the comparison happens between the two converted copies.

Does it find moved paragraphs, or just added and removed ones?

A moved paragraph shows as a deletion in one place and an insertion in the other. It is honest but wordy — if a section has been relocated wholesale, expect to see it twice.

Will it catch formatting changes?

The comparison is about the words. A change of font or margin will not be listed, and a change of wording will be.

Can it just tell me in plain language what changed?

Yes — say so in the sentence and you get a written summary instead of, or as well as, the marked-up file.

How big can the files be?

Up to 10 MB each. Each document is compared up to its first 20 pages, or its first 100 on a paying account, and the result tells you if that limit was applied.

Do you watermark the result?

No.

Do I need an account?

No. Your first comparison runs without signing up.

Are my originals changed?

No. The comparison produces a new file and both of the documents you uploaded are left alone.
